Evidence-Based Systematic Approach

BrainPaint uses a systematic approach, which was demonstrated in research to have a large effect on attention (ADD & ADHD), anxiety, depression, thought disorders, social introversion, hysteria, hypochondria and openness (reduced defensiveness). A systematic approach takes out all the guesswork, ensuring more consistent results among providers.

No Pricey Brain Map Necessary

BrainPaint does not require an expensive brain map to get started. A study compared the technique BrainPaint uses for protocol selection to that of a brain map and concluded: “…it is not possible to draw conclusions regarding any advantage regarding QEEG-specific training -- versus Scott/Peniston [the BrainPaint technique] -- using current analysis.” ~ Roger J. deBeus, PhD, BCIA-EEG

In fact, BrainPaint providers aim for measurable results in life improvements rather than just changes in brainwaves. The majority of studies do not find conclusive evidence of changes in brainwaves that correlate to improvements in symptoms.

Rather than a brain scan, your first session consists of a 90-item questionnaire completed with your practitioner here in the office. The BrainPaint software then determines your unique protocols based on your responses. Every subsequent neurofeedback session starts with your practitioner asking you 14 questions. Your responses determine what, if any, refinements need to be made to your protocols. So, every session is uniquely designed for your unique, immediate needs.

Personalized, Evidence-Based Approach

BrainPaint's Unique Software for Trauma, Addictions, and More

Elevate Brain Training is proud to offer the ONLY neurofeedback system that automates the exact implementation of  the alpha-theta protocol demonstrated in studies to address trauma (PTSD) and addictions. Alpha-theta is also the best protocol for peak performance, fears, phobias, fibromyalgia, and some forms of anxiety, depression and chronic pain.

The BrainPaint software is a computerized version of the same manual that was endorsed by the Human Subjects Review Committee at UCLA for one of the largest randomized control studies in the field.

BrainPaint Testimonial Video: In practice for 27 years, Pam Elliott -- MSED, NCC, LCPC -- relates her experiences with the power of neurofeedback for such issues as ADHD, anxiety, OCD, & trauma.  She also provides insight into the difference between neurofeedback and EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing).

 Evidence-based Protocols Incorporated in BrainPaint

BETA/SMR:  Of the hundreds of studies using Beta/SMR protocols, BrainPaint selected the most researched and evidenced-based treatment Beta/SMR protocols that yielded the greatest effects for cognitive dysfunction to incorporate in BrainPaint (Meta-analysis,
“The Evidence-Base for Neurofeedback as a Reimbursable Healthcare Service to Treat ADD/ADHD” [click on title for link]).

ALPHA-THETA:  This protocol is the most effective evidence-based treatment protocol for addictions and trauma.  It yielded the largest effects on all domains of psychologic functioning per the most rigorous tests (Peniston 1991  & UCLA 2005 [click here for link]).

ASSESSMENT TOOL FOR PROTOCOL SELECTION:
The original BrainPaint decision tree was based on the manualized version of the 2005 UCLA study.  Since then, the protocols have been further systematized using artificial intelligence
(UCLA 2005 [click here for link] Developments in EEG Analysis, Protocol Selection, and Feedback Delivery, Journal of Neurotherapy, 2011 [click on title for link]).

EVIDENCE-BASED EEG FILTERING TECHNOLOGY:  BrainPaint is the only system that uses an empirically superior mathematic equation for filtering EEG.  Read more here:

Brain Painting vs. Video Games

During each session, clients stay engaged by a screen with colorful fractal images -- changing 40 times per second -- that their brains are "painting." Some neurofeedback systems use video games to engage clients, but children find the games very antiquated compared to the sophisticated, complex games they play with at home; therefore, they quickly get bored and don’t seem to take the feedback as seriously. Painting with your brain is a novelty.

Individualized Protocols, Uniquely Designed for Your Unique Needs

BrainPaint follows the same model as personalized medicine. Personalized medicine proposes the customization of healthcare, which includes practices that are tailored for each individual. This is the #1 BrainPaint difference. Depending on your issues and goals, the BrainPaint system used here at Elevate Brain Training customizes each and every protocol just for you!  And, the best part is, it is without medicine, and without the side effects that accompany medicine.

BrainPaint Creator & CEO Bill Scott: Innovator, Expert, Visionary

Landmark UCLA Study 2005
Bill Scott was the principal investigator of this landmark study titled,
"Effect of an EEG Biofeedback Protocol on a Mixed Substance Abusing Population"[click here for link] which was published in the American Journal of Drug and Alcohol Abuse in 2005. This is the first large (n=121) randomized controlled trial in the field of EEG biofeedback. The results of this study have since been replicated by other reputable institutions. Other researchers involved in this study include David Kaiser, Siegfried Othmer and Stephen Sideroff.

The results of this study include:

  • Nearly doubling the success rate of abstinence one year following treatment (77% for the experimental group versus 44% for the control group)
  • Significant improvement in treatment retention
  • Improved variables of attention (ADD/ADHD)
  • Significant improvements in 5 of the 10 MMPI-2 scales

The Peniston-Kulkowsky and Scott-Peniston Protocols were modified for this study to improve brain stability. These protocols are referred to as the Scott-Kaiser Protocols.

A General Biography of Bill Scott:

  • Co-investigator of a research project studying somatization disorders at UCLA’s Neuropsychiatric Institute with Lobsang Rapgay, Ph.D.
  • Designed a research study investigating brain states during mindfulness meditation with Jeffery Schwartz, M.D. and Barry Sterman, Ph.D.
  • Developed new neuroimaging technology that creates a fractal signature from EEG,  and is successfully utilizing this technology as a form of EEG biofeedback in a process termed BrainPaint®.
  • First author and principal investigator of a controlled study on addictions (n=121) -- published in August 2005 in The American Journal of Drug and Alcohol Abuse, with David Kaiser, Ph.D, Siegfried Othmer, Ph.D, and Steven Sideroff, Ph.D.
  • Principal investigator & first author -- along with Dr. Eugene Peniston -- of an addiction research project that yielded a 79% success rate with Native American alcoholics. An interview with Bill by the Psychiatric Times was published as a feature article.
  • Bill & David Kaiser presented research at the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He trained the researchers Dr. John Gruzelier & Dr. Tobias Egner (members of Department of Cognitive Neuroscience and Behaviour, Imperial College Medical School) in the use of alpha-theta protocols.
